Beda Eastman
I am a writer, student, and seeker based in Naarm / Melbourne. First and foremost I acknowledge that I work and live on the land of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurring people of the Kulin Nation, and pay my respects to all Elders and Traditional Owners. Colonisation never ended, sovereignty was never ceded.
Currently I am studying at the University of Melbourne: a BA majoring in Islamic Studies and a Diploma in Arabic. I hope to continue my journey of learning for many years and in many places across the world. This website is a folio of my writing, and I welcome anyone interested in working, collaborating, or discussing with me the ideas that I explore.
My main areas of interest are theology, philosophy, Islamic mysticism (Sufism), and women in Islam. I am also passionate about championing justice and ethics, particularly in relation to advocating a free Palestine. My writing usually takes the form of creative nonfiction and research essays.
Current project:
Collaborating with artist Leslie Eastman to develop an Information Centre for the recently rebuilt Coburg Islamic Centre. This is a space where Muslims and non-Muslims can learn about the religion, from its basic principles and practices, to its rich 1400 year history. It is also a place where artworks, exhibits, and events can be held. My input has been editing and writing some short pieces for an interactive app which is displayed on touchscreens in the Info Centre, as well as curating a book collection for the space.
The interactive screens in the Information Centre contain articles, image galleries, and short videos about Islam & Muslim societies.
The growing book collection holds Qur’an, Hadith, books on the Seerah, history & politics, and spiritual self-development, as well as books for children.
This Info Centre has been the passion project of many, with incredible contributions by members of the community, particularly by Leslie Eastman who directed and was involved in all aspects of the space. It is an honour to be able to take part in this endeavour.
